Xbox External Drive Disconnection

Using a USB external hard drive with an Xbox Series X and it keeps disconnecting .

I’ve been using a USB external hard drive with an Xbox Series X for a while now. It’s the same drive I’d used successfully on the Xbox One but on the newer console it keeps disconnecting. This resulted in me getting booted from games which were using the storage, and annoying “Reconnection” messages popping up when using apps and games located on the console itself.

The drive was sat on a shelf, so not moving, and the cable was properly connected. It’s an Xbox branded drive, so compatibility shouldn’t be an issue.

Solution

In my case the hard drive was connected to a USB port on the front of the console. Plugging it into the a USB port on the rear of the console instead appears to have remedied this issue.
