Azure Backup Internal Error

Symptoms

  • An Azure VM failed to backup using Azure Backup.
  • An email alert may have been sent titled Fired:Sev1 Azure Monitor Alert Backup Failure containing the description Backup failed with an internal error.

Cause

There are a number of possible causes, and the Microsoft documentation aka.ms/backup-operation-failed linked in the alert covers several, but the easiest one to diagnose and fix is the OS C: drive is full.

Solution

Check the C: drive has free space. If it doesn’t then free up space and try running the backup again
